JOHN MANSFIELD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

John Mansfield was a beloved community member, talented artist, vibrant soul, and a close friend and mentor to many of us at True North.

John truly exemplified and believed in the power of mentoring young people. With the blessing of John’s sister Judy and his family, we are honoring him with a scholarship award. Judy wanted to say how much this would mean to her brother who LOVED working with kids, he had none of his own. The whole family is grateful for this honor.

This scholarship is available to high school and home-schooled seniors graduating from the Norwood school district. Consideration for this scholarship will be prioritized on demonstrated compassion, financial need, mentorship/leadership, community involvement, and a GPA of 2.50 or higher.

The 2024 application will open in March 2024.

John with Gehring Scholar Sammi Reed, True North co-founder and Executive Director Vivian Russell, and John's longterm friend, Charlie Bausch. John was awarding one of the scholarships that he helped launch. He always wore Hawaiian shirts to graduations and tell stories of growing up on a military base in Hawaii and going to school barefoot.

John Mansfield helped launch True North in 2014. His support never wavered. John’s mix of wisdom and humor always combined perfectly to help pave a path forward no matter the challenge. Similarly, his art spanned the humorous and the practical. John famously for created the 'down tie,' an artistic spin on formal wear for men who lived in cold climates.

Among his many civic accomplishments, he created the Quest Scholarship and the Tom Hale Memorial Scholarship. Despite the hard work of such civic generosity, John kept a balance, telling stories of springtime wildflower hikes in California, river adventures, pickle ball, and ukulele jam sessions. He would even come along with his camper and help with True North summer camps on the mesas.

We are honored to have gotten the chance before he passed to tell John about our plan to dedicate a scholarship in his name. We are hopeful this scholarship will continue to foster compassion and support in his name.

We will miss him greatly.
